What is the registration fee?
We're working on some sponsorship opportunities now, and
hope to avoid charging a registration fee. If this does not work out,
we will need to charge a fee that will not exceed $150 per
team.
What's with the name "Cycladic Imports"???
Surely you can figure that out! Perhaps it's not just
a CoinCiDenCe that the letters
CCDC appear in CyClaDiC?
In the technical information, why is there an "X" in the host
names and IP addresses?
The X will be replaced by your team number, which you
will be given when you register. For instance, while the
documentation says your web server has name
www.cycladicX.ccdc in the team packet, if you register
and are assigned team #3 then the actual name will be
www.cycladic3.ccdc. Likewise, the IP address of this
machine would be 10.16.3.17 (which is shown in the team packet as
10.16.X.17).
Will there be time for teams to work with systems before the red
team starts offensive actions?
Yes - the red team will not start activity until at
least two hours into the contest (exact time that attacks start is not
given).
Will there be time for teams to work with systems before scoring
starts?
Not significantly - scoring for service availability
will begin shortly after teams enter the rooms, so as you explore the
systems you need to keep in mind that services need to be available
even during that time.
Since the contest machines have web access, can we pre-build
configurations before the contest and download them during the contest?
No, you may not download anything you have produced for
the contest, or use any prepared files in electronic form. Note that
the "Student Teams" section of the rules packet addresses this in
several rules. In particular, anything you access on the Internet
must be public web sites (5th rule) and individual staging areas for team
materials may not be used (12th rule). This is also the idea behind
the rule disallowing PDAs/memory sticks/media. Note that all web
accesses will be going through a transparent web proxy, and we will
monitor that access.
Can we use the Internet access for non-contest activities? Can
I check my personal e-mail during the contest?
Again, the answer is no. I know that it's very
tempting when you have Internet access to hop over and check your
gmail or yahoo mail account, but this is against the rules (7th rule
under "Student Teams"). We generally can't monitor the contents of
emails or instant messages, so to avoid any appearance of improperly
getting outside assistance, we are simply disallowing this entirely.
We don't block this technically, so there's a bit of an honor
system involved, but we will check the proxy logs for these kinds of
accesses.
Are we to use preinstalled OSes? If so, do we have a list of
those. If not, can we install our own.
Yes, you will be using pre-installed machines. Part 2
of the team packet gives a network diagram that shows what OSes will
be used and where services will be running. You are not required to
keep using the OSes that we install, but you are required to keep
those services available. If the services don't come up properly
after an upgrade, or even if they're temporarily unavailable during an
upgrade, you'll lose points...
Are the Windows XP and 2003 newly installed full versions or are
they updated from prior versions? Will we have slipstream updates for
these?
We're not going to give any more specific information about the
installations before the contest - you'll have to discover that when
the contest starts. As far as slipstream updates (or package updates
for other systems) you'll need to either get those over the net or
request that we make them available locally as described in the
earlier
email to teams (send an email with what you want - a complete URL -
and it will be made available at the contest).
Will there be a removable hard drive in the room?
No, there are no removable hard drives.
Will there be access to CD/DVD burners and CDs & DVDs?
Some machines have CD burners and some have DVD burners, and there
will be some blank CDs and DVDs. We have 4 blank CDs and 2 blank DVDs
in each team room - if you think you'll need more, please bring your
own. If these are in a shrinkwrapped package, you can take them in
and use them - otherwise you'll need to check them in with the white
team to verify that they are blank.
What about USB thumb drives?
The same condition applies with thumb drives as blank
media: if it's new and still in unopened original packaging, you can
use it.
Will the Firewall box also be the router or is there a separate
router to the 10.17.x.x Network?
The firewall has two IP addresses on two separate
physical interfaces, so yes, it is a router.
On the memo from Christos Kefalas; Regarding the PIX or ASA
firewall - Has the firewall shown in the diagram been physically
removed from the room or is the box still available?
As the memo said, this box is "no longer available" -
that means it's gone. There is no more Fedora Core 6
box.
How many machines have dual NICs? Are additional NICs available
or can they be added?
None of the team machines will have dual NICs, and we don't have any
to
spare. I understand how useful this can be, so I'll see what options
we have, but at this point in time the 10 teams pretty much use up all
of the available equipment at UNT.
Questions about the firewall:
- Are the new Cisco firewalls NEW meaning come with Cisco online
support? Or is the Cisco OS going to be left vunerable or is it "out
of bnounds" for the Red Team if no support is available to secure it?
- What OS version of PIX is being run?
- Will some teams have PIX and others have ASAs? If not which one
are they PIX or ASA?
These boxes will be demo boxes coming straight from Cisco. I'm afraid
I don't have any more info on specific versions at this time - our
main priority will be to have identical boxes for all rooms, and this
should be possible. The team number assignments will be random, so if
the equipment varies slightly for some reason it will just be random
chance what you get.
In the network diagram, is everything connected to a hub or to a
switch? Do you have a specific model information?
The network is plugged into a switch, but it's a simple
unmanaged DLink 8-port switch.
What are the netmasks on networks? I imagine it would be a /24?
Yes, that's correct - you "own" the 10.16.X.0/24 network.
Are the people who created and signed off on the team packets
the same people responsible for writing the FAQ, or is someone else
interpreting their own responses to questions? Is the FAQ merely for
(presumed) clarification of rules by the person writing it?
The FAQ answers are by the same person who provided the
team packet, so are clarifications to those rules. These are all answers to
questions that some team sent to us for clarification - it's not just
questions/answers that we make up.
Are the collective Team Packets and associated documents the
primary reference material for what actions are legitimate/expected at
the competition?
Yes! But keep in mind that these outline a "spirit of
the contest" - while we tried to cover all the bases, we might not
have thought of everything. Please don't try to be legalistic and
"loophole" this. If there is something you plan to do that is in any
way questionable as far as the spirit of the contest (and not just the
letter of the law in the rules), please ask for a clarification.
Calls are not permitted in the room, but in this day of utility
converged consumer electronics if someone is listening to their mp3
player on their phone, but not making/receiving calls, and does not
connect it to a computer, is there an issue?
We can allow this under two conditions: the
person is not talking on the phone (no outside communication), and the
device is not a networked device that is connected to the network.
Which machine in the topology will have the terminal adapter
connection to the Cisco device?
Our plan is to hook the Windows 2000 Pro machine to the
Cisco device with the serial cable. We don't have these devices yet,
however, so haven't tested this, and so this is subject to change.
You can feel free to change this setup and rearrange machines however
you choose during the contest.
Will any of the computers have 64bit processors or anything
other than x86?
At least some of the systems are newer x86_64 processors,
but all systems are running 32-bit OSes.
Since we no longer have a Linux box as a firewall which would
have
facilitated central network monitoring...does the switch have a SPAN
port? Can a hub be inserted between the switch and the router?
Unfortunately, the switch does not have a spanning
port, and we don't have any hubs. You'll just have to do the best you
can - but all teams will be in the same situation.
Is the DNS server only a local DNS or do we need to allow DNS
requests from the outside?
It's an external service (resolves names for external hosts).
There is mention of SAP software in the Employee Handbook but no
mention of a SAP server which server will this be on?
Refer to the team packets for specific software that will be involved
(no SAP).
Will the rooms have white boards? Can we bring our own white board?
There's plenty of whiteboard space in all the rooms.
Feel free to
bring your own colorful dry erase markers...
Will Active Directory or the Windows Fileserver need to be
accessible
from the outside world?
It's not on the list of initial services that have to
be accessible,
but I make no promises as to how things change during the contest.
Is there a list of what software people have requested to have available?
Yes - the list is here.
The rulebook states that software can be downloaded as long as
it is free and available publicly. Does this include trial
software?
We didn't specifically rule out trial software, so as
long it's not some special deal you have (so it's available to
everyone), we'll allow this.
What is your cutoff time/end date for requests to burn software
to a disk?
Cutoff for software requests is tomorrow afternoon at 3:00.
This list is updated regularly - check back for updates!
